Gouldian Finch -  Australian Yellow Gouldian Finch (Erythrura Gouldiae) Web Site

The Gouldian Finch is the most beautiful of all the Australian Finches and was first discovered by the English  ornithologist John Gould in 1844. In the wild they are found in Woodlands and Scrublands in the tropical Regions of the Northern Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Northern Queensland, Australia.

Once one of the most common finches in the wild in Australia the Gouldian is now listed on the endangered species list with an estimate of less than 2,500 birds remaining in the wild.

The decline in the native population has been put down to a number of factors - the birds were heavily trapped up until the early 1980's, a loss of their native habitat and the air-sac parasite has also had an effect on native finch numbers.

I have personally spoken to people who have travelled through "Gouldian Country" and they have seen plenty of Gouldian's in the wild in many locations, and, they are somewhat skeptical of the "experts opinions" that less than 2,500 birds remain in the wild.

From its discovery back in 1844 the Gouldian Finch is widely found in aviaries and finch collections all around the world. In the wild the native bird has three head colors. Yellow, Red and Black.

Gouldian Finch colors vary from purple breasted (natural bird), to white breasted, blue breasted, lilac breasted, combined with body colors such as pastel green, double factor pastel green, blue, cinnamon, pastel blue, single and double factor pastel blue, dilute, Sea green, dark factor through to the
